Bryan Ferry was the sensual frontman, Brian Eno threw his deconstructionist spanner into the works, and they played songs that sounded like demented, sexy logarithms. After Eno left in 1973, frustrated that Ferry was marginalizing his input, Roxy became a different beast entirely, developing a suave, sophisticated pop-soul sound and abandoning the art-rock niche to enlist a wider audience. This lush compilation, released to accompany their reunion tour (minus Eno), captures both sides of Roxy and, true to the subversive spirit that informed their early years, does so in reverse order. This anti-chronology means they open with the languid, supper-club croon of 1980s hits "Avalon" and "More Than This," plus the beauteous cover of John Lennon's "Jealous Guy," then peel back the years through midperiod gems such as "Dance Away" and "Love Is the Drug," before closing with the hyperventilating, superbly twisted bubblegum of "Pyjamarama" and "Virginia Plain." Blondie's Deborah Harry has said that as a little girl, she had hoped Marilyn Monroe was her mother. The fantasy of having a celebrity parent is not lost on 15-year-old Dinky Bossetti (Winona Ryder), who is positive that the glamorous Roxy Carmichael is indeed her birth mother. The 1990 film Welcome Home, Roxy Carmichael is more about Dinky and the town's obsession with its one claim to fame than Roxy, who really isn't all that famous. (She had a song written about her.) Little seen and seldom heard, Roxy works more as a poetic device here, causing the townspeople of her small Midwestern hometown to get all worked up about her return home and delving into why their worth is tied to the glamorous life Roxy represents. Ryder was in her late teens when she tackled this role, and no amount of loose black clothing or surly demeanor can mask her gamine beauty. Still, she manages to pull off the role of the class outcast, who in all probability would've had a better life if her parents hadn't stuck her with the oddball name of "Dinky." As she explains to someone who is confused by her actions, "It's not for you to understand, really." But Dinky is a stubborn teenager who is sure that her life would have been better if it turned out that Roxy is her birth mother. Indeed, it could've been. Roxy had an affair with local landscaper Denton Webb (Jeff Daniels) and gave the baby up for adoption exactly 15 years ago. Hmmm. As it turns out, Dinky was adopted, too. The film is pleasant and Ryder is a joy to watch, but in terms of offering a compelling storyline, it's not much different from your average movie of the week. --Jae-Ha Kim

Originally conceived for the British market, where Roxy Music and its debonair frontman Bryan Ferry were much more popular than in the States, The Platinum Collection gathers every band and Ferry single, along with some popular album tracks, on three chronologically arranged discs. As an overview of both acts' extensive and connected careers, from 1973 through Ferry's 2002 Frantic album, this is a far more comprehensive overview than the many single compilations already released. Initially, there was a substantial musical dissimilarity between lead vocalist Ferry's solo work, much of it less artsy and aggressive than early Roxy songs such as "Do the Strand" and "Virginia Plain." Eventually, by the late 70s the two became less distinct. The primary difference being Ferry's tendency to radically rearrange musty pop, folk, and R&B covers between his more sensually lush, dance oriented music. Roxy Music disbanded in 1983 leaving Ferry, whose solo work comprises almost half of this package and the entire third disc, to carry the torch. Short but pertinent notes about each song, along with small reproductions of the original British picture sleeves, provide some historical background. And although all three CDs include 15 tracks, there is plenty of unused room on each for more music. Regardless, this is an essential addition to any British rock fan's collection. Get yourself a snappy title and a couple of marquee names (however disreputable) and you might just snag your no-budget movie a national release--as Zombie Strippers colorfully proves. The names in question belong to porn star Jenna Jameson and Freddie Krueger himself, Robert Englund, both of whom look quite comfortable in this sleazy milieu. As the title suggests (well, "suggests" might be a mild word), there has been an outbreak of the undead in a strip club, with strippers actually improving their onstage antics after they've become zombies. (Given the number of implants on display, it's a wonder the zombies didn't keel over from silicone poisoning.) Englund is the proprietor of the place, Jameson is a star dancer, and a couple of actresses in the "nice girl" roles don't have to take their tops off, although almost everybody else does. Writer-director Jay Lee fills the movie with political gags and a bunch of philosophy references (Jameson reads Nietzsche, the locale is Sartre, Nebraska), all of which play like a lame attempt to distinguish his movie as something other than a puerile horror-comedy. Only thing is, when you try to disguise the fact that you've made a puerile horror-comedy, it kind of takes the oomph out of both the horror and the comedy. The political jibes are about as feeble as those in Southland Tales, but at least Zombie Strippers is shorter. Shot on video, it looks atrocious, but perhaps that doesn't matter very much. --Robert Horton
